YOUTH VISION GREEN SOLUTIONS

‘Youth Vision, Green Solution’ an interschool student collaboration program was next progressive step taken by the school. This three-week long program was organized during the month of April 2021. It aimed to create a difference towards climate change. Sustainable solutions based on real-life case studies were presented by students’ teams. Thirty students, three schools, five teams, two mentors (teacher and student) in each group started their marathon for sustainable solutions through 2 progressive sessions prior to the program.

Challenge: Suggest four sustainable solutions to reduce carbon footprints due to the usage of air conditioners in the Middle East. Solutions need to be supported with valid factual information. Reference to "Energy Strategy 2050" for an increase in consumption efficiency of individuals and corporates must be made.
Solution: Green Saver’s solutions to these issues (with reference to the Energy Strategy 2050) are the usage of R744 as a refrigerant, solar as an energy source and ammonia/water as a coolant.R744 is non-toxic, does not contribute to global warming and ozone depletion, non-flammable and energy-efficient, thus a suitable replacement for R134. The use of solar energy is advantageous due to its renewability and non-polluting nature.

Challenge: Shifting the diet of billions requires large systemic changes. How will you promote sustainable diets among the young generation? Suggest four sustainable systemic changes supported with valid factual information and link them to the U.A.E National Wellbeing Strategy 2031.
Solution: Green Life aimed to raise awareness for food waste and expand access to nutritious food to improve international food security by enlisting the help of sustainable diets. Vertical pink farms were suggested which can help overcome inefficient resource inputs and negative environmental impacts such as infertile land, unsuitable climate due to the production being indoors. Empty buildings and vehicles (caravans, trailers, etc.) can be converted into a pink farm. They can also help decompose food waste. A Fruitgies Menu was proposed next. It is a menu that has 8 food items (grown in summer and winter). Thus, helping raise awareness and spreading sustainable diets

Challenge: Suggest four AI applied agro-technology solutions that can be used in the U.A.E to improve food security. Analyze the effects of these technologies from a sustainable perspective. Solutions suggested need to be supported with factual information. Reference to the U.A.E National Food Security Strategy 2051 must be made. Grow Green suggested solutions for agricultural issues with reference to the National Food Security Strategy 2051.
Solution: To combat problems with soil fertility and availability, they presented the usage of hydroponic technology adapted to vertical gardening techniques and the Groasis Waterboxx.
Furthermore, to tackle the issue of limited water sources for irrigation, they proposed Trickle Drip Irrigation systems, overhead sprinklers, and natural salination. Renewable energies, limiting factory emissions and constructing greenhouses were suggested to
reduce the growing aridity and climate change. Lastly, to reduce food wastages in the U.A.E, conversion of food waste into biofuels was recommended.

Challenge: How have the coastal areas been affected in the past four decades in the U.A.E? Develop a sustainable framework of four solutions to overcome the challenge of Coastal Erosion in the U.A.E. Solutions suggested need to be supported with factual information and link them to the Biodiversity Strategy of the U.A.E (2014- 2021).
Solution: Green Mile tackled problems that lead to coastal erosion in the U.A.E which are increased urbanization, dredging, rising sea levels, and storm surges. Their solutions were vegetated dunes, hydroelectricity, reef balls (which purify water and provide a habitat for fishes), Vibro Compaction (which makes soil denser), boulders, mangroves, geotextile sand containers (which are bags of sand to break waves), and Coir (which are coconut husks that hold soil in place; and promote vegetation growth).
Furthermore, they created Project H.I.V.E (Hybrid In-Vibro Engineering) which involves engineering permeable barriers using recycled materials along cliffsides to break waves. It also hardens cliffside soils to prevent erosion. Lastly, they introduced Project Re-Coir which is applicable to only coastlines. It involves a barrier made from recycled plastics and uses clothing fibres to retain eroded sediments.

Challenege: Suggest wetland conservation models for the U.A.E which are pro tourism. Link it with the Environment Vision 2030.
Solution: Eco Green conducted an online survey which enabled them to identify possible solutions. Assuring that the natural heritage is passed down is a priority, so they recommended modernizing traditional water conservation methods to keep water clean and minimize wastage.
